A year as a Cloud Engineer

Last week marked one year at Mindgrub, and I thought it worthwhile to reflect on the past year. It’s definitely been a year of growth, almost overwhelmingly so. I’ve worked on dozens of projects in varying capacities, and each one has taught me new skills, or deepened my knowledge on a tool or service I already knew. A list, at least of what I can remember

  • Learned Typescript enough to be capable
  • Learned much more about Python
  • Learned AWS CDK
  • Learned the basics of Node.js
  • Built many Lambda functions
  • Learned AWS ECS intimately
  • Architected a number of projects
  • Wrote the Infrastructure as Code for those projects
  • Built out CI/CD pipelines in Gitlab and Github
  • Refamiliarized myself with MySQL and PostgreSQL
  • Learned NoSQL with DynamoDB and MongoDB
  • Learned how to design systems that autoscaled for heavy loads
  • Worked with Azure Devops
  • Wrote an Azure App Function
  • Learned Nginx and learned more about Apache
  • Learned far more about Drupal
  • Learned how to manage WordPress, including multisites, and using wp
  • Learned how to read AWS docs effectively
  • Learned how to troubleshoot AWS services and connections
  • Helped manage Kubernetes
  • Learned how to use Helm to upgrade Kubernetes services
  • Improved my knowledge of AWS security
  • Learned to use CodeDeploy to create CI for on-prem servers

And probably a whole lot more I’m not remembering at the moment.

It’s definitely been a whirlwind. I started my cloud journey in large part because I wanted to be able to stretch my skills beyond what my previous job needed from me, and that’s very much what I’ve gotten. That isn’t to say it’s necessarily been an *easy* journey – a lot of this knowledge is hard won while struggling with unknown problems on tight deadlines. I am so much more confident in my skills now, though, and I’m excited to keep learning.
